Academic Credit

If you are attending a LIVE workshop, there are two options if you are interested in taking the course for academic credit. Below are descriptions of those two options. (For information on academic credit for the VIDEO class, please click here.)

Option I:    1.5 Quarter ( = 1 Semester units or credits).
Name & # of Course: Motivating the Unmotivated TED 7240
Cost: $54, Payable to CSUH (Cal. State Univ., Hayward) (You can also take the course for one Quarter credit for $36.)

Requirements: Participation in the live workshop, plus a paper which will mostly describe how you used the information from the class. (If you are not currently in the classroom, you will still be easily able to complete this requirement.)

Option 2:    3 Quarter ( = 2 Semester units or credits).
Name & # of Course: Motivating the Unmotivated TED 7240

The way Option 2 works is that you participate in the live workshop and then complete the second half of the workshop by listening to audio tapes. As you listen to the tapes there are several brief in-class assignments which need to be completed. You will also need to write a paper that mostly describes how you used the information from the workshop and how it worked. (Even if you are not currently in the classroom, I promise you will still be easily able to complete this requirement.)

If you pay the fees on the day of the workshop, you will be able to leave with the audio tapes and a packet with the directions and pages on which to complete the in-class assignments.

Cost: There are two separate fees to be paid if you are taking Option II, one to ELR and one to Cal State.

1) You will pay $40 for taking the second part of the class on audio tape to Effective Learning Resources, plus a $20 deposit for the audio tapes; the $20 will be returned to you when the tapes are returned to me. This amount can be given at the workshop or mailed to me later. This can be paid by credit card.

Total to Effective Learning Resources: $60 -- $20 refunded when the audio tapes are returned. (If 2 or more people use the same tapes the fee is reduced to $30 per person + one deposit of $20)

2) $108, Payable to CSUH (Cal. State Univ., Hayward), for the academic credit. Each of these separate fees can be paid by check or Visa/Mastercard.Registration for credit, and the collection of all fees relating to the academic credit and option II, will take place the day of the workshop.

The credit issued by California State University, Hayward is upper division, post-baccalaureate (postgraduate) credit. The University doesn't call it graduate credit because it is not automatically applicable to a graduate degree program in the California State University system.

Almost every state and school district treats this credit just as if it was graduate credit. I have never had anyone who reported that this credit was denied for salary increment. I have on rare occasions received calls from people who have taken the class who have been told that the credit would not be honored, but in every case, once I explained the credit to the administrator, the credit was accepted. If you, or someone in your district has questions about the applicability of the credit, please don't hesitate to contact me.
