If
you are unable, or do not wish, to attend the live workshop, the
class is available on video.
The
video shows the fast-paced, one-day workshop attended by thousands
of educators, that balances hands-on learning with short lectures,
discussion and planning. A book of over 190 pages is provided
for use during and after the class, and is yours to keep. The
book inlcudes additional information on: rule-setting, reinforcement,
expressive writing, transition time, goal-setting, providing feedback,
and lots more.
Taking
the class on video has proven a very effective, simple and flexible
way to learn the information presented in Motivating the Unmotivated.
People find that the opportunities to stop and contemplate and
rewind and hear things again, has been particularly helpful in
absorbing and integrating the material. Reports from those who
have taken the class on video sometimes reflect a deeper understanding
and application of the material than those attending the live
workshop. Some advantages of taking the class on video are:
The
way the course works is that you view
the video tapes (and listen to the audio tapes, if you are taking
option two or three) and complete the simple in-class assignments, as you
would if you were actually attending a live workshop. (The video
actually has the total one day workshop as it is conducted at
various venues around the country; you could look on the audio
as a second day.) You would then need to complete a paper which
chiefly describes how you applied the information from the class
and the results of it's use. (Even if you are taking this course
at a time you are not working with students, I promise that you
will still be able to easily complete the paper.)
The
fees
for taking the video class are listed below. If you are not taking
the course for academic credit, you need only pay the fee to Effective
Learning Resources. Please note the discounts available when more
than one person is using the same set of tapes.

Here
are the three options available:
(If you are not taking it for credit, simply ignore the CSUEB fees.)
|
Option
1
You may take the course for 1 Quarter,
or 1.5 Quarter (1.5 Qtr = 1 Semester) credits, by viewing
the workshop on video. The tapes show the full day workshop
which was advertised on the flyer. The fees for Option 1
would be:
- $95*
payable to Effective Learning Resources (ELR) plus deposit
of $40; the $40 will be returned when the tapes are returned
to ELR. The ELR fee can be paid by check or credit card.
(Discover, VISA, Mastercard or American Express).
Total to Effective Learning Resources for one person using
the tapes: $135 ($40 refunded when tapes are returned).
- plus
$81 for 1.5 Qtr = 1 Semester credit (or $54 for 1 Quarter
credit) , payable to Cal. State Univ., East Bay.
(Check or VISA/Mastercard)
Separate fees to Effective Learning Resources & CSUH;
do not combine ELR fees and Cal. State fees on same check.

Option
2
You
may take the course for 3 Quarter credits (3 Quarter = 2
Semester credits) by viewing the video of the 1 day workshop
and also listening to the audio tapes.
The fees for Option 2 would be:
- $135*
payable to Effective Learning Resources (ELR) plus a deposit
of $50; the $50 will be returned when the tapes are returned
to ELR. The ELR fee can be paid by check or credit card.
(Discover, VISA, Mastercard or American Express).
Total to Effective Learning Resources for one person using
the tapes: $185 ($50 refunded when tapes are returned.)
- plus
$162 for 3 Quarter (= 2 Sememster) credits, payable to Cal. State Univ.,
East Bay. (Check or VISA/Mastercard)
Separate fees to Effective Learning Resources & Cal. State;
PLEASE do not combine ELR fees and Cal. State fees on same check.
*Discounts
on fee to Effective Learning Resources for more than one
person using the same set of tapes for Option 2 (Video
and Audio):
It
may appear that the Effective Learning Resources fee for
Option 2 is higher than if you take the live workshop. Actually,
when you factor in the additional $40 you pay for the second
(audio) section at the live workshop, you find that it is
$25 cheaper to take the video class than the live class,
if you are taking it for the 3 Quarter credits.

Academic
Credits: The credit issued by California
State University, East Bay is upper division, post-baccalaureate
(postgraduate) credit. The University doesn't call it graduate
credit because it is not automatically applicable to a graduate
degree program in the California State University system. Almost
every state and school district treats this credit just as if
it was graduate credit. I have never had anyone who reported that
this credit was denied for salary increment. I have on rare occasions
received calls from people who have taken the class who have been
told that the credit would not be honored, but in every case,
once I explained the credit to the administrator, the credit was
accepted. If you, or someone in your district has questions about
the applicability of the credit, please don't hesitate to contact
me. (For
information on academic credit for the LIVE workshop, please

Comments
from Previous Participants of the Video Class:
(To
read what participants of the LIVE workshop have to say,
please click here.)
The
level of learning sometimes seems higher for the video (and audio)
than when people see me do the workshop in person. Rather than
hear more about this from me, you might benefit from hearing from
other educators who have taken the class in this way:
- "I
must admit that I was somewhat skeptical of a video course to
deal with the many challenges faced, on a day to day basis,
by teachers dealing with a wide array of behavioral issues.
To my honest surprise, I was given many practical strategies
to motivate not only the unmotivated, but all of the students
in my classroom." (5th Grade)
- "This
was the most insightful class I have taken in a number of years.
The tools are simple, but meet many complex goals and needs,
and are excellent ways to start kids on a positive life journey."
(Middle School)
- "I
consider this class the most valuable I took in 30 years in
the educational field. Your refreshing insights, practical and
applicable information, pertinent illustrations and stories,
are woven together in a "can't miss" format. Your class provided
a wealth of ideas to be put into practice to create positive,
conductive classroom filled with numerous learning opportunities.
I can highly recommend your video & audio class for any and
all educators truly interested in the success of children."
(High School)
- "This
class was extremely beneficial to me as a person, and as a teacher."
(4th Grade)
- "This
class has equipped me to be a more effective teacher. I truly
believe that I now have the tools at hand to enable students
to take ownership of their behavior and of their learning. With
manual close by, I look forward to implementing many positive
strategies that will make a difference in the lives of my students,
my co-workers, and in my own life." (Special Education
Teacher)
- "I
really enjoyed taking this class at home, because it allowed
me to work at my own pace. The activities that I have used from
Motivating the Unmotivated tapes and book have proven to be
successful with my students." (2nd Grade)
- "This
has been the most useful course I have taken related to student
motivation and behavior. Many of the courses which I have taken
have focused on the theoretical aspects of motivation. Motivating
the Unmotivated has not been one of those. Its practical suggestions
of techniques has allowed me to be more successful as a teacher,
it has enhanced my student's learning and it has brought a new
perspective to motivation. As a result of using these techniques
and strategies, I have noticed a marked difference in my effectiveness
as a teacher and achievement of students. It is apparent that
we are in partnership when it comes to their success. In other
words, we are both responsible for making sure that they achieve
by putting forth their best effort." (7th Grade Math)
- "Nearly
everything presented was something I could use right away."
(High School Science)
- "This
workshop presented a lot of useful material, I am so glad I
took the time to watch the videos and listen to the tapes. The
techniques have really helped the students realize that they
have control over themselves." (Elementary Teacher)
- "I
am amazed at how many practical, useful ideas have received.
I am especial encouraged that there are concrete, practical
methods that I can use to help motivate the unmotivated students
and put new life into my classes." (High School English)
- "As
a result of the topics presented in this class, I feel highly
motivated to make a difference in each one of my students lives."
(1st Grade)
- "I
am grateful that this class has motivated me once again and
taught me new things, which is a lot to accomplish with a teacher
that has taught for twenty years. Your class offers support
to weary teachers and a reinforced realization that there truly
are techniques and way out there, that work to motivate the
unmotivated." (4th Grade)
- "I
have found that all the topics covered have been very valuable
in terms of classroom use. The book is not bogged down by a
lot of philosophical jargon but has very useful information
that can be applied to any grade level, and addresses so many
of the areas that can affect the success of my classroom."
(3rd & 4th Grade)
- "During
my viewing sessions of the course, I gained a wealth of new
ideas." (9th Grade English)
